When it comes to sports cars under 20k, there are a multitude to choose from! However, reliability, smiles per miles and running costs are key things to think about. Although you could purchase yourself an old Jaguar or V8 Mustang, are they really going to be cheap in the long run? We think not. That’s why we’ve created a list of cars that we have either owned, test driven or had experience with and determined what we believe, are the best sports cars for under 20k. Here are our Top 5 Sports Cars for Under 20k:
5. AUDI TTS
Audi is renowned for its technology, speed and build quality and the TTS is no exception. These cars are fast, not too costly to maintain and have perfect everyday drivability. Good versions of the TTS will most likely cost you close to your 20k budget however, with the practicality you get, its worth the money as daily driving becomes no headache. Another thing to remember is the TTS is coming to the end of its run. Audi will no longer be producing these cars so the residual value may also increase!
4. Subaru WRX STI
Again, another car at the top end of your budget however, these are built for all weather conditions. If you’re living in the UK or any other European country where its privy to rain, these cars are fantastic friends. Subaru are renowned for building cars capable of handling harsh weather and harsh environments but best of all, they’re rally bread. If you’re a rally fan and appreciate low torque turbo charged engines with 4 wheel drive, these are ones to check out!
3. Mazda MX5
I’m sure you’re thinking “I see the MX5 on all these lists” and you’d be right. The MX5 in our eyes is an incredible car however, not all favour its looks or ‘hairdresser’ personality but, we can’t let that take from how magnificent this machine is. Lightweight, manual, rear wheel drive, cheap to run pocket rocket. There are so many reasons why you see these cars all over the roads in the UK, they’re just good. A slippy rear end with a solid and stiff front makes this a brilliant B road burner. You may not be the coolest kid on the block however, you will have the biggest smile on your face.
2. Honda S2000
Now, the s2000 admittedly is getting a bit long in the tooth. Models dating back to the early 2000’s make for some compromises. The interior is cool, but dated, you lack the essentials when it comes to AppleCarPlay and AndroidAuto, and as far as we’re aware, heated seats are nowhere to be seen. That being said, revving the car up to 9,000rpm with the digital race dash flashing and your bum practically sat on the tarmac is an incredible feeling. These cars are certainly becoming an icon and one which good examples are starting to rise in value. For roughly £10,000 – £13,000 you can get yourself a really clean, low mileage variant. This may not be the car you’ll want to daily drive but with the money you save you can get yourself a cheap runaround!
1. Toyota GT86
Yes, yes we know there is a new GR86 however, the GT86 is still by far one of the best cars (in our opinion) ever built. Lightweight, incredibly cheap to run, fast when pushed, fantastic looks, plenty of spare parts available, easy to drive and great on track. The GT86 is one of the all time greats and one which no petrolhead can deny. Even if you pull up next to a Ferrari the owner is going to be giving you the nod. The GT86 is one of the all time greatest sports cars and as the new GR86 has come out, values have stayed clear and true. Facelift versions (2017+) with full alcantara trim and all the bobs and whistles can be found around £15,000 – £20,000. The best thing about this car is its ability to adapt: Raining? Go have some fun. Snowing? go have some fun. Sunny? Go have some fun. With the trust of Toyota’s reliability behind you, this is an all weather, all year round fun machine.
